On Monday, we wrote about Josephine Riesman’s powerful new book about Beck that comes out on October 6 and was excerpted last week in New York magazine.
What impresses us so much about The Last Temptation of Beck is not only Riesman’s deep understanding of Beck’s musical career, but also her thorough research into Scientology, describing Beck’s on-again, off-again involvement in it, and the abuse he suffered from this controlling organization.
Key to that thesis is Riesman’s bombshell revelation that in 1986, when Beck was just 15, he was involved in a relationship with a 29-year-old woman Scientologist, leading to an internal scandal in the church.
Riesman suggests that Beck was scarred by that experience, leading to his complex later relationship with the church that his father David Campbell remains so committed to today.
In the book, Riesman explains that she talked to Skip Press, who in 1986 was an “ethics” volunteer at Scientology’s American Saint Hill Organization (ASHO) in Los Angeles when he was assigned to work with the 29-year-old woman. She was upset that she had been told by her Scientology auditor to keep away from the 15-year-old boy.
