I'm not a lawyer either, but I did look into the relevant law when I was considering filing a defamation lawsuit.

The Google AI explanation you quoted actually makes the distinction I was pointing out: libel per se concerns harm and damages, while actual malice concerns the publisher’s state of mind.

Your original definition said libel per se was “defamation so severe that the target doesn't have to prove actual malice in court.” But as your quotation acknowledges, a public figure may still have to prove actual malice. Calling something libel per se doesn’t remove that requirement.

At the beginning of her "rebuttal video," which isn't a rebuttal. She characterizes the claim that she is a Scientologist as a lie. But then she quotes the person responsible for the "lie" as saying to her, "I know you're not a Scientologist".

Has Aaron more recently characterized her as a Scientologist? :unsure:
