With Americans going to the polls tomorrow, the one race we’ll be watching here at the Underground Bunker is taking place in Clearwater, Florida.
That’s where our old friend Mark Bunker is running again to get back on the city council, where he was a member from 2020-2024.
Mark is mostly known for his longtime activism about the abuses of Scientology, but as a city councilman he was active in a lot of local issues.
During his absence, the city’s capitulation to Scientology has only become more apparent, with the council voting in June to hand over a downtown street to the church for its L. Ron Hubbard Hall project.
With the way citizens of Clearwater then rallied to sign petitions and force the council to reconsider that vote, it’s clear that many locals are unhappy with local government for doing Scientology’s bidding.
With that kind of discontent among voters, you’d think it would be an opportune time for someone like Bunker to get back on the council. But in this nonpartisan race, he’s in a runoff with a former staffer of a local Republican congresswoman, and so the local GOP has attacked Bunker for being a Democrat.
