It’s been far too long since we’ve mentioned Bonnie Woods, the American woman living in England who in 1999 won a legendary court case that resulted in the Church of Scientology not only paying her damages for harassing her, but also apologizing to her.
Bonnie had been a member of Scientology in the 1970s in the US until she moved to Britain in 1982, when she decided to leave. She then became a born-again Christian in 1991. And she not only became a critic of Scientology, she ran a hotline where concerned family members could get information about it.
Scientology then put her through a classic “Fair Game” harassment campaign, distributing fliers with smears about her, questioning her faith, for example.
So in 1993 she sued with the pro bono help of one of the largest law firms in the country. Scientology countersued, twice, but dropped those claims as it got its butt kicked in court and agreed to pay Bonnie 55,000 pounds.
