Was it the newts? The bats? The water main?
We’re not sure which of the many objections raised to Scientology’s plans for a new car park at the church’s UK headquarters broke the camel’s back, but apparently it’s just all too much for church leader David Miscavige.
Former London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross let us know that Scientology has temporarily withdrawn its application for the new development plans, and will re-apply later after dealing with all of the negativity coming from various environmental groups opposed to the project.
This all started in 2023 when Miscavige brought back the annual IAS gala at Saint Hill Manor, Scientology’s UK headquarters in West Sussex, after a hiatus of several years for the pandemic. Alex organized a protest at the three-day event, and then noticed that Scientology was not asking for required permission to erect the giant tent that the gala is held in.
Rather than simply knuckle under and request that permission, Miscavige instead submitted the application to pave over a field and put in lighting in a rural area with ancient woodland, and to put in a cement footing for the big tent. As a result, numerous objections have been raised by local groups about how such a development would negatively alter the character of the place. And all for an event that only happens three days a year.
So now, the plan is on hold as Dave tries to figure out how to deal with so many objections. Alex, meanwhile, continues to point out that the easier thing to do would be to hold the party somewhere else. Will Dave listen? Does he ever?
