Running for city council in Clearwater, Florida is a nonpartisan affair, and you would think that a candidate’s opinions about the city’s bullying by the Church of Scientology would matter more than allegiances to a political party.
But Pinellas County Republicans have decided to target Mark Bunker with a torrent of pathetic ads, calling him “Bonkers” and putting googly eyes on him in order to push their candidate, Sam Wilson, a former staffer for Republican US Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.
One flier a reader forwarded to us attempts to smear Bunker, then the vice mayor, for standing with a trans person at a Pride Event.

A TV ad calls him “bonkers” for, among other things, voting unanimously with the rest of the council to raise energy rates by $2 a month in order to meet extreme budget shortfalls in the gulf coast town.
Not mentioned in the ads, of course, is that Bunker opposes Scientology’s agenda in the beleaguered town, where a majority of the council has been a rubber stamp for the church’s program.
