Perhaps more troubling are the remaining members of this influential social media family: Rizza Islam and Kevin Jenkins. Their misinformation has been focused on the African-American population, which has been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The CCDH report points out that Jenkins used the Facebook live-streaming feature last January to broadcast a speech to his digital followers. The video has now been deleted, but in it, the CCDH reports that Jenkins said of the COVID-19 vaccines: “They are spending a trillion dollars to convince you [the Black community] that it’s OK to kill yourselves [with the COVID vaccine].” Meanwhile, Islam has an Instagram account called “Not Another Tuskegee Experiment” which compares the use of the COVID-19 vaccine in African-Americans to the inhumane treatment of Black men with syphilis who were left untreated to essentially see what would happen.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), which published the Anti-Vax Playbook, recently published a new report that analyzes anti-vaccine messaging on social media. It identified 12 individuals it calls the “Disinformation Dozen” who they have calculated are responsible for up to 65% of the anti-vaccine content on Facebook and Twitter:

1. Joseph Mercola
2. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
3. Ty and Charlene Bollinger
4. Sherri Tenpenny
5. Rizza Islam

The “Disinformation Dozen” are prolific in the online anti-vaxx movement – but Facebook and Twitter don’t appear to be trying to supress them.

The other accounts include long-standing conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxx-focused physicians. Some are in personal and professional partnerships with each other, and have connected social media profiles. Others, such as Rizza Islam – who encourages vaccine hesitancy among an African-American audience – adopt a more targeted approach.

CCDH chief Imran Ahmed says some anti-vaxxers are “introducing new audiences to old conspiracy theories and hatred” in addition to “putting the success of the vaccine rollout in jeopardy.”

“It’s no surprise to see many of the most prominent superspreaders of anti-vaccine disinformation have also engaged in antisemitism.

“The worldview preached by anti-vaxxers, which states that the global pandemic and vaccine programmes were all planned by a shadowy global elite, are just a step away from prominent antisemitic conspiracy theories,” he told the JC.

5. Rizza Islam

Rizza Islam’s anti-vaccine posts aim to spread vaccine hesitancy amongst African Americans. While Facebook removed Rizza Islam’s Facebook Page in February, he continues to post anti-vaccine messages from his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

Islam intentionally discourages fellow African Americans from being vaccinated. His dangerous rhetoric contributes to the increased risk of death this sector of the population faces from the coronavirus. His Twitter account is a carefully managed stream of vaccine misinformation, focusing on the covid vaccine. Every person he turns away from the vaccine is a potential death at his hand in a community he claims to serve.

He’s no stranger to manipulating healthcare for his own profit. In 2015 the executive director of World Literacy Crusade (WLC), then Hanan Islam, Ronnie Steven Islam (AKA Rizza Islam), and Hanan’s adult children were arrested for Medi-Cal fraud and insurance fraud for billing for a detox program. The Compton, Californian offices of the WLC housed a drug detox program using “dry heat sweat therapy.

This Jan 4 article explains what’s awaiting a very deserving con artist. Hanan and Rizza Islam get trial date for $4 million Medi-Cal fraud at Scientology rehab. At a pretrial conference, the trial was set for May 20 in the case, which seeks felony convictions against Hanan Islam, 61, and three of her children, including her son Ronnie “Rizza” Islam, 30. If you're an African American, Rizza Islam is not your friend.

H. The Anti-vaccine Industry

Even as we try to reach out to communities with the right messengers and right messages to build vaccine confidence, we also need to address the proliferation of misinformation about COVID and COVID vaccines in the mainstream media and online. Even relatively low-level exposure to online misinformation can significantly reduce vaccine-seeking.

It’s low-hanging fruit to deplatform the biggest amplifiers of anti-vaccine misinformation, their organizations, and those they fund. The Center for Countering Digital Hate has identified twelve repeat offenders who are responsible for 65% of COVID vaccine misinformation online: Joseph Mercola, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Ty and Charlene Bollinger, Sherri Tenpenny, Rizza Islam, Rashid Buttar, Erin Elizabeth, Sayer Ji, Kelly Brogan, Christiane Northrup, Ben Tapper, and Kevin Jenkins. Their organizations include the Children’s Health Defense, the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), and the Millions Against Medical Mandates. Many make money marketing books, DVDs, and courses about vaccines or sell dietary supplements and false cures as alternatives to vaccines. In short, they stand to profit from the dangerous misinformation they are spreading.

De-platform The Disinformation Dozen

* * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

I’ve been writing about anti-vaxxers for a dozen years now, warning of the threat to public health that they represent. Today, though, the threat is far greater than it was in the past, because now we’re in the midst of a deadly pandemic, and vaccines are our only tool out of it. Merely educating the public on the benefits of vaccines isn’t working in the face of a deluge of misinformation from anti-vaxxers. It’s time to take away their platforms.

A new report from the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) reveals that 65% of the anti-vaccine disinformation online can be traced to just twelve people. This offers hope that we can actually do something: by removing a tiny number of accounts, millions of lives can be saved. The social media platforms have the power to do this, and they could do it virtually overnight.

So who are the Disinformation Dozen? Here they are:

Who are the 'disinformation dozen' rapped by the White House?

* * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

The White House singled out 12 persons branded as the "disinformation dozen", who are held responsible for a large amount of misinformation regarding COVID-19 in an effort to clamp down on Silicon Valley on Friday to address vaccination disinformation, .

"There are about 12 people who are producing 65% of anti-vaccine misinformation on social media platforms," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

That figure comes from the organisation, Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), which designated roughly a dozen people as "super-spreaders" of anti-vaccine disinformation in a report released in March.

The majority of the 12 people are active on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

According to the research, they frequently avoid breaking social media site restrictions by swapping code words or hand signs for words. The "disinformation dozen" has a significant social media following and generates content at a high and regular pace, according to the research.
