Has it really been four years already since our big piece about Leni Riefenstahl and L. Ron Hubbard for The Daily Beast? Gosh, that takes us by surprise.
One of our all-time favorite pieces, we were able to write about a subject that not a lot was known about — Hubbard and Riefenstahl’s brief 1960 collaboration over a film script — when one of our readers lucked into a copy of the screenplay, and then we managed to track down new information about the film editor and Hubbard fan who had brought these two controversial 20th century figures together.
We were reminded about this when another of our great helpers — the researcher who dives into old newspaper archives to find us lost gems — let us know that he’d managed to find his way into a new archive, the South African newspaper the Rand Daily Mail, in the 1960s and 1970s.
One piece he knew we’d be interested in referenced Riefenstahl, and it appeared in that same fateful year, 1960. Here’s the short article…
