[David Miscavige in 2001, just weeks after 9/11]
On this solemn occasion, 25 years after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, we remember that the Church of Scientology tried to turn the tragedy into a sales opportunity.
We’re referring, of course, to church leader David Miscavige’s infamous “Wake-Up Call” that he produced that very day and sent out all Scientologists everywhere.
He told his flock that they alone understood that evil psychiatrists were behind the terror, because Scientology knows that psychiatry is the root of all evil in the universe.
He also said that it was obvious the other religions of the world are helpless to do anything, and that only Scientology has all of the answers.
OK, so perhaps we can understand that after such a shocking morning, the leader of a religious organization might engage in this kind of rhetoric as a way to reassure his followers.
But what solution did Miscavige propose for the best way to counter the terror of 9/11?
Would it shock you to know that the answer is “buy more Scientology courses”?
The Wake-Up Call was a very big deal in Scientology. Former top executives marked it as a major shift in Miscavige’s tone and direction. But looking at it 25 years later, it looks to us like mostly just another Scientology sales pitch.
Here’s the whole thing. Enjoy the bombast.
