The tabloids are losing their minds now that Tom Cruise, 63, was spotted holding hands with actress Ana de Armas, 37, in Vermont this weekend.
And why shouldn’t they go crazy? It’s been a long time since Tom had a publicly confirmed relationship, even if neither party has issued a statement making it “official.”
We’re getting lots of questions about what it means to date Cruise, Scientology’s most iconic celebrity, for Catholic-raised Cuban-born de Armas, who was previously paired with actor Ben Affleck and was briefly married before that, and appears to have no background in Scientology.
We figured the best way to answer that is to go over Cruise’s previous history with women, and how much Scientology became a part of their relationships.
Wife #1, Mimi Rogers, was already a Scientologist and got Tom into it when they started dating in 1986. (See our full report about their relationship here.) Wife #2, Nicole Kidman, grew up a Catholic but became a very dedicated Scientologist during the first couple of years of her marriage to Cruise before pushing it away. And wife #3, Katie Holmes, similarly embraced Scientology in a big way when she began dating Cruise, but later walked away from it (and Tom) in a rather spectacular manner.
In both the cases of Kidman and Holmes, these women accepted becoming very dedicated Scientologists in order to be with Cruise, dutifully going through auditing while holding onto the “cans” of an E-meter, only to later reject it.
