New York may not be "dead" in the sense that it still has residents, but it is in deep trouble which may be terminal.

Entertainment is a big part of the NYC experience. Why do people want to visit there? Why live there and pay sky high rents?

People like being able to attend plays and concerts, check out new bands in some hole in the wall place, eat a nice meal in an environment where there are dozens of good restaurants within walking distance, go check out a museum or the big library, etc, etc.

If that is not available, then there is no incentive to be there and put up the with the pathologies of the city.
It'll all be back. There are vaccines now, though we won't get them 'til next year.

And indoor dining at restaurants is allowed now in NYC, at 25% capacity.

And how long can they pay their bills at 25% capacity?

Restaurants often are close to the edge in profitability. I was a partner in a restaurant once, it is NOT easy.

I'm sure you're right. I stuck that in there because Veda asked if I ate indoors at a restaurant as though that were currently impossible when it's not.

Is there any restrictions on so called non essential services?

I would guess that the org may have been classed as such? No idea here, just asking.

Short answer, no.

NY State is currently divided into red, orange, and yellow zones based on virus testing positivity. There are different levels of restriction for different zones.

Currently I believe all of Manhattan and almost all of NYC is in a yellow zone. For legal purposes the org would be classed as a house of worship. Note that even in a red zone (highest restriction) houses of worship can still operate.

Goldman Sachs is moving out of NYC. And they won't be back

Socialists don't mix well with free market capitalists.

The city’s fundamental problem is an open hostility to markets and freedom.

From policies such as universal pre-K and mandated paid sick leave to the city’s $15 minimum wage, rent-controlled housing, and oppressive tax climate, New York’s political class has shown a disdain for capitalism, private property, and business concerns, and a troubling affinity for central planning.

You don’t have to take my word for it. Listen to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who told New York Magazine this in 2017.

“What’s been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property. I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be.
I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too.
Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that’s the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development….
Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed. And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents. That’s a world I’d love to see…”
Did you catch that? The mayor of the world’s financial capital believes the primary obstacle to prosperity is private property. He thinks city officials should get to determine where buildings go and “who gets to live in [them].”

As one observer noted at the time, de Blasio is not the first political leader to thirst for such power.

“Other leaders have had such power, in the Soviet Union and China and Venezuela, and those systems did not produce progress. Or even toilet paper,” David Boaz wryly observed in USA Today.

Unfortunately, neither Cuomo nor de Blasio seem aware of this history. Prior to and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the pair have embraced the heavy hand of big government instead of free markets. New York’s oppressive climate has yielded a batch of bad fruit—surging violence (shootings were up 112 percent in November), injustice, economic depression, joblessness, and general despair.

.

Exactly!

Complicating that even further is the fact that hard leftist strongholds like NYC, LA, Chicago, et al, the citizens are simply the hosts --which provide the progressive political parasites with an endless supply of riches, power and glory to feed off of.

The leftist social engineers are not there to make anyone's life better (other than their own) and certainly not there to give freedoms to the host which could then escape the parasite's grips. The only concern of the parasites is to create vastly greater numbers of securely tethered hosts-- as quickly as possible. Thus, the "Open Border" policy.

When you talk about NY going down the tubes - California is in the middle of a business exodus - away from California as many businesses flee the state.

NEWS FLASH: November 29, 2020 3:45 P.M. Church of Scientology of NY, 227 W. 46th St., NY, NY 10036

Please look at this picture and notice the org is all boarded up again. I went around the whole block between 7th and 8th Avenues and the org is the only building boarded up.

The last time they placed pallets in front of the windows. This time they made custom fitted plywood inserts and painted them black.

They would be happy if businesses and conservatives left the state.

In fact, it would be really cool if the entire Western corridor (California, Oregon and Washington) seceded from the union and set up their own idyllic socialist nation. They'd already have international status as the country with the 6th largest economy in the world, so that's an excellent start!

Then they could defund and cancel the police.

Then they could open their borders to everyone in the world to come and live for free, providing hundreds of millions with free food, free housing, free education, free insurance, free phones, free phones, free computers, free internet and free public transportation everywhere.

It would soon turn into a paradise!

There would be no prisons, because everyone would be on the honor system to do the right thing.

Criminals would naturally reform and not need to be arrested or jailed.

Everyone would use the right pronouns and never do or say anything that triggers others.

One giant safe space.

And there would be no robberies because everyone already has everything they want.

And there would be no violent crime because racism and cops would be gone.

And there would be no wars because every country in the world would love the laid back vibe of the newly formed country.

They would need a cool utopian kind of name, maybe something like Dudeistan or possibly Udope-ia.

He does make the point around 14 min in, the politician atmosphere is shifting, with the possibility of a retroactive tax bill that has passed but is unsigned on Newsom's desk, but worse, the liberal political position has an undercurrent of socialism, and is turning into Marxism. He discusses the bloated state government, and it's need for money, yet it does the opposite of what is needed to attract businesses into the state - the net loss of population is in the 100 K range yearly.

If one looks across the entire nation, it is quite obvious that progressive politicians DRIVE OUT businesses from their states/cities. They DRIVE AWAY law-abiding people who are afraid of lawlessness on their streets and in their neighborhoods. They DRIVE AWAY hard working, tax paying people. And they ATTRACT & CONGREGATE multi-generational welfare dependents and criminals. All this is the genesis and DNA of how sprawling GHETTOS are formed in each of those cities.

Why do you think progressives do this?

The Curley Effect

By making life miserable for people who don't vote for you, you can stay in power for a long time (Until your driving out of productive people finally causes collapse, by which time you will have moved on)

Perfect answer!

Abstract
James Michael Curley, a four-time mayor of Boston, used wasteful redistribution to his poor Irish constituents and incendiary rhetoric to encourage richer citizens to emigrate from Boston, thereby shaping the electorate in his favor. Boston as a consequence stagnated, but Curley kept winning elections. We present a model of the Curley effect, in which inefficient redistributive policies are sought not by interest groups protecting their rents, but by incumbent politicians trying to shape the electorate through emigration of their opponents or reinforcement of class identities. The model sheds light on ethnic politics in the United States and abroad, as well as on class politics in many countries including Britain.
Thus all Democrat-controlled cities turn into welfare/murder hell holes after the businesses are burnt out or flee out of being terrorized. Same for hard working citizens, they flee to suburbs. Same for law-abiding citizens, they flee as well. All that is left is the useful idiots who believe that the people who fled caused their ghetto. lol
