On Monday the Department of Justice revealed that it had arrested a New Mexico man named Jamison R. Wagner for a series of politically-motivated arson attacks against a Tesla dealer showroom in Albuquerque on February 9 and the headquarters of the New Mexico Republican Party on March 30.
There’s been a media frenzy in the last 24 hours about Wagner, 40, which has focused on such details as his being part of an online group known as 500 Queer Scientists and wearing lipstick on his driver’s license photo.
But former Scientologists tell us that another detail of Wagner’s life has gone unnoticed by the media: He grew up in a Scientologist family and was on staff at one point at the Scientology “org” in Albuquerque.
Jamison’s father is Randy Wagner, the Scientologist we wrote about in 2018 because of the “disconnection letter” he wrote to his sister Sylvia Wagner DeWall. Sylvia had left the church in a very dramatic way after she was threatened with being excommunicated and her marriage splitting up. Instead, she and her husband Tim DeWall both decided to leave Scientology together.
Randy then sent Sylvia a letter to let her know which side he was on.
“I respect that you have grievances against the Church. I don’t respect you attacking the Church or its staff. I want you to understand that when you do this you are indirectly attacking me and my family,” Randy wrote. “What is true for me is that Scientology does work. The Church is growing and expanding and the staff I have dealt with over the years have been in the vast majority very good people with good intentions. I see no reason to attack them. I am one of them. My wife and sons are as well.”
That’s Randy Wagner saying that his sons, presumably including Jamison, were Scientologists when he wrote this letter to his sister in 2018.
A Scientology publication lists Jamison as completing the course “Staff Status II” in 2002.
One former Scientologist tells us they remember him on staff in Albuquerque in the 2002-2008 time frame, and that his mother, Kim Wagner, was the org’s Executive Director.
We’re checking to see what Jamison’s involvement may have been in the last few years, but there’s no question that he grew up a Scientologist in a heavily involved, dedicated family, and that his own involvement spanned decades.
“Wagner is charged with two counts of malicious damage or destruction of property by fire or explosives and will remain in custody pending a detention hearing which has not been set. If convicted of the current charges, Wagner faces between five and 20 years in prison for each count,” the Department of Justice said in a press release about the arrest.
The FBI says it caught Wagner with surveillance and because he left a lot of clues at his crime scenes, and there was even more evidence connecting him to the arson attacks at his home.
One example: The GOP headquarters that was torched was also sprayed with graffiti…
