We’re always glad to hear from Wise Beard Man…

Christopher Kuo wrote a solid piece that I’m certain introduced Clearwater’s struggle with Scientology to a new audience. There were a couple of things that jumped out at me. The first was some details about David Allbritton’s meetings with Miscavige and the “suggestion” by Miscavige that Allbritton reach out to Florida AG James Uthmeier.
David Allbritton is a good man. I enjoyed my time on the council with him. I wish he had respected our then city attorney’s opinion instead of going over his head. I believe that led to David Margolis’ departure from the city which was a loss.
When Scientology lost a first vote on giving away Garden Avenue as David said he needed some more time to consider the Save the Garden proposal, Scientology wasted no time involving the Florida AG. This is the struggle the city has. Scientology does not want to be a partner. They want to be a victor. This is their downtown and they’ll do what they want with it. It is not a mere coincidence that Scientology whales like Patricia Duggan donate millions to Republican causes, politicians and PACs. They have used their influence from the city council level to the White House and it is sickening what money can buy.
I don’t believe Allbritton felt he was being used by Scientology, but that certainly is how it looks. The irony is that someone in David’s family is every bit as big a critic of Scientology as I am. Unfortunately, that family member is not on the council. Ryan Cotton is. I believe Ryan has no problem giving Scientology whatever they want, and his friend Sam Wilson is already showing that he will pledge allegiance to Miscavige if and when he gets elected. Scientology money and backing and the party they have purchased are going to make sure Sam wins. But I’m still fighting.
