Friday evening the Save the Garden movement announced that its signatures had been certified by the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, which should force the city of Clearwater to reconsider its decision to give South Garden Avenue to the Church of Scientology. But as we pointed out, the city council has asked for an opinion from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who has sided with Scientology in the past. (And who happens to be up for re-election on Nov 3.) That’s a lot swirling around, so we asked Clearwater city council candidate and former vice mayor Mark Bunker for his thoughts…
I haven’t heard anything on the Uthmeier opinion but I think we can all envision what it will be and it won’t be good news for the people of Clearwater. It is going to be interesting (to say the least) discovering how the city is going to try to dismiss this mandate from the citizens of Clearwater. The last thing this council wants to hear is direction from the people who live here.
A good example is the council moving up the date for a potential vote on a proposed sports complex getting constructed at the Landings. The current council wants this...badly. The problem lies in the fact that the neighborhood does not want it at all. See how annoying voters can be? The people voted down turning the Landings into an industrial park while I was on the council. They very clearly did not want to have the neighborhood disrupted and forever changed. I’ve been vocal in support of the neighborhood and I’m sure moving the date to vote on it before the Nov. 3rd election day is merely a coincidence.
