From the very beginning, in the early 1950s, there have always been adherents of L. Ron Hubbard’s “technology” who broke away from his official movement to practice his ideas on their own.

These independent Scientologists, or Freezoners, have come and gone, with an occasional attempt to organize actual brick-and-mortar churches of their own. (There’s the former Haifa mission that thrives there under former Scientology members Dani and Tami Lemberger, for example.)

But we told Victoria Palmer that we don’t recall independent Scientologists planning what she’s organizing later this month: A direct protest of the Church of Scientology and its leader David Miscavige by practicing Freezoners at Scientology’s Los Angeles headquarters, known as ‘Pacific Area Command’ to Scientologists, and ‘Big Blue’ to the public.

“I decided that it was time for us to unite and stand for the truth about Scientology,” she tells us.

Palmer is a very interesting figure we have begun to pay attention to recently. A lifelong Scientologist from Seattle, she’s an OT 3 and a Class IV auditor, and her profile in the Pacific Northwest went up when she became part of anti-mask mandate rallies in the area during the pandemic.

Trying to capitalize on that notoriety, she ran this summer for Seattle City Council, but lost her district’s primary on August 1.

Ten days later, an independent Scientology conference began in Reno, Nevada, organized by Rey Robles, a gathering he calls the “Theta Alliance.”

The "INDIE" Scientologists badly need a new name.

Why in the world would anyone want to leave the Church of Scientology and then name their new organization as "INDIE SCIENTOLOGY?" The word Scientology comes with ten quadrillion tons of horrible baggage. The public rejects, reviles and ridicules "Scientology" so why in hell would you want to use that cursed word?

Can't Indies "obnose" the public's contempt and fear of anything calling itself Scientology?

EXPLANATION: I guess if Indies could "obnose" things in life, they would not be Indie Scientologists.

Is that mean? Or just simple reality? Ron told me to use the ARC triangle and to always try to increase Reality, so get off my case! LOL

hard questions. likely they think they can do it in the most "pure" way, unhampered by stat pushes, politics or undesireable personalities that are power hungry, or worse, somewhat sadistic. this just makes them reformed Scientologists. Protestant Scientologists, if you will. I suppose if they were to change the name to something else, they would consider that sQuiRrElLy, but don't consider what they are doing as unethical, to the contrary, they no doubt consider their movement more ethical. There is a similiar phenomena in the gaming world, with the emergence of private servers, running commercial games at low cost or free, and sans some of the more repugnant restrictions. Also happens in political movements, the culinary world, likely many other examples.

That said, they certainly have chosen an odd cross to bear ( sic ). Ask any Neo-Nazi.

Is that mean? I wouldn't worry. For the most part, they probably don't give two shits about what you or I think. To that, I raise a toast.

In effect, Indies "flow power" and essentially worship the one person in the world who would fanatically attack and brutalize them more than any other living person.

And these Indies are typically people who have studied and re-studied the "PTS-SP TECHNOLOGY" dozens upon dozens of times.

They couldn't "handle" or even spot an "SP"-- even if Adolph Hitler was their reg who promised to help them improve their powers of concentration by selling them a trip to get handled at the newly opened Ideal Concentration Camp.

Sorry, it's just virtually impossible for me to imagine how Indies missed the memo that Ron hated and destroyed people who broke away from his church (i.e. the "squirrels") with every vicious bit of criminal thuggery he could imagine.

I've never been around or even near "Indies" in my entire life. What brief encounters I have had with them on this discussion group have not been impressive--or (to be honest) even comprehensible. Thus, I can't even guess wtf they must be thinking. How do they not know that Hubbard doesn't want them to "flow power" to him. He wants them to go into exile and die.

This makes sense. Most people I know feel Scientology itself went squirrel around 1986

i think that dates you to being part of a particular cohort of members -- some day i may have to try to figure out how to categorize them, but i'd guess you're and those you know are somewhere between being later boomers and early gen-xers who joined around a decade before then.

from what i've found studying the history, there was for example a cohort of late greatest generation and early boomers, who thought scn went squirrel around the time of KSW in 1965 and the first rehabilitation unit in 1969, which often seems to be referred to as the era of the imposition of 'heavy ethics'. but those people were either long gone by the time you were involved, or if they had been around that long either had been blissfully unaware, had filed it in the Orwellian 'memory hole', or were complying with Hubbard's totalitarian information control policies and did not dare speak of 'SPs' and 'entheta'.

i think the periods also approximately coincide with the dates when various different factions of indies and schools of theorizing hold that Hubbard was replaced by body doubles -- as a way of accounting for perceptions of the organization going squirrel. unfortunately i also haven't made notes of the 2 or 3 different dates, but i think one was that mid '60s point, and then another around when LRH had his motorcycle accident that partly due to lack of proper palliative care soured his attitude, at a point when the Sea Project was failing (and coming ashore to stick its daggers into walls) and other things were changing and going wrong as well.

as i've written here before, i find it fascinating how each generation of disaffected ex-members seems to think the era before them was the golden one, and that things only went wrong after they joined and before they left.

i hope that makes some sense to you.

yeah, i've had that thought, too. it's typical of fanatics and revolutionaries that they don't think things through realistically and realize that if they got what they wanted, like with the first Commune of Paris and Robespierre they might find themselves the ones with their heads in the guillotine in the factional and ideological infighting that almost inevitably arises. and in the particular case of scn that scenario would involve the restoration of a ruler they have idealized but who is actually ruthless and disregards them -- maybe a bit along the precedent of the Night of the Long Knives, when Hitler had solidified his power enough to wipe out loyal and even adulating supporters who he actually found reprehensible.

Oddly, that is a thing. I've always felt that no matter what I pursued in life, I was always a bit late to the game, when in reality, it was generally quite the opposite.
I think it may be a necessary illusion to creative output. The catchup illusion.

yeah, it's definitely a human tendency -- and probably falls into some sort of cognitive bias -- to engage in various sorts of rose colored glasses nostalgia.

i think though that scn and especially the polices of the CoS exploit and amplify that. along the lines of the Orwellian phrase 'Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past', discussion of past problems are effectively forbidden and the history of them put down the 'memory hold', and so those who join can't help but end up with the perception that the era before them must have been more idylic, since they see and experience current problems and have no knowledge of earlier ones for historical context (which all to often gets ignored even in the best of circumstances anyway).

I think it would make a funny thread to try and note the DIFFERENCES between COS Scientologists and INDIE Scientologists.

I acknowledge that it would a very "suppressive" thread for Indies. They might begin to rollercoaster and get ill.

I am always somewhat mystified by the concept of "INDIE". It always seem to me like a prison break where some of the escapees spend years digging a tunnel under the massive COS prison. Eventually they tunnel out far enough that they are beyond the fortified prison fence. So they begin digging upward and finally break thru and see sunlight!

THEY ARE OUTSIDE THE PRISON!

They begin to creep a few inches at time away from the prison guard towers. But suddenly and inexplicably they stop crawling away when they are just a few yards outside the prison perimeter.

Then they open up a picnic blanket and hold a graduation where they celebrate everyone's wins on digging the tunnel. When that concludes they set up a tent and build a campfire as their permanent new home.

In other words (just like the SOLO NOTS tech where some BTs are "half-blown" and "hang-up" at some distance from the Pre-OTs body. The Indies half-blew the COS and then camped outside the prison like grazing sheep.
