On Friday, we posted a review of Tom Cruise’s new film Digger written by our friend, longtime film critic Luke Y. Thompson. That was how we learned that reviewers had been asked to keep some big surprises in the movie from audiences.
We knew from the movie’s trailer that Cruise was playing Digger Rockwell, some kind of major industrialist, that his business had caused some kind of major environmental threat, and that the US president, played by John Goodman, was somehow involved.
Beyond that setup, if there was some major twist involved, we decided we wanted to find out what it was by watching the movie rather than by finding out some other way, and so on Friday we went for a fairly late showing, 9 pm, at our local cineplex here in suburban New York City.
We don’t know if it was the lateness of the hour, but we were a little surprised that on opening night, there were only five other souls in the massive IMAX theater we had chosen.
Forewarned by early press that critics were wildly divided about the film, we decided just to take Digger on its own terms and do our best to enjoy it. And we did. It’s wildly creative, the big twist really did surprise us — and initially put us off — but as it progressed it really worked, we thought.
