Yesterday, we heard from our friend Mark Bunker, who fell short on his attempt to regain a seat on Clearwater, Florida’s city council. Gracious in defeat, he offered some wisdom to this Gulf Coast town that is the seat of Scientology’s “spiritual mecca,” the Flag Land Base.
We have no doubt that Scientology leader David Miscavige is breathing a sigh of relief that Bunker lost, and that Clearwater’s city council will continue to be a rubber stamp for Scientology’s ambitions.
And speaking of that, tonight the council will be discussing the Save the Garden petition that should, according to the city charter, force the council to reconsider its June vote giving a downtown street to Scientology, or put it on the ballot as a referendum for voters to decide. We’ll be watching to see how that discussion goes.
In the meantime, we thought we would review what other results from Tuesday’s midterms election might have interested Scientology in one way or another.
As of this morning, Scientology’s favorite US Representative, Anna Paulina Luna, has declared victory in her 13th Congressional District race against Democratic challenger, retired Army Brigadier General Leela Gray, but the Associate Press has not called the race.
With 99 percent of the votes counted, Luna is at 49.48 percent with a 2,517-vote lead. Her district includes Clearwater and the Flag Land Base, and we’ve reported in the past how wealthy Scientologists have enthusiastically raised money for her.
