Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard saved his greatest prank on his followers for the very last step on what he called the “Bridge to Total Freedom.”

Spend the years and incredible amounts of money getting to what he called “Operating Thetan Level Eight,” and the reveal is devastating, according to numerous people who have achieved it and then left the organization.

You see, for years as you struggle through the “OT” levels, you are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars removing unseen “body thetans” from yourself, invisible entities that have to be located and encouraged to go away from you with the help of an E-meter. These are disembodied souls that have their own histories and hang-ups, and they may be angry and disoriented, or they may be drug addicts (that’s OT 4), and who knows what they’ve been doing while they took up residence inside you.

But finally, after what can take 20 years or more, you get rid of your last “BT” as you finish OT 7 and then make arrangements to spend a few weeks on the Freewinds, Scientology’s cruise ship that sails in the Caribbean, and is the only place where you can do OT 8. And when you finish it, you will receive a nice certificate from the ship’s commanding officer, Sharron Weber (see above).

So, "I'm actually perfect aside from my imperfections, and those really aren't me, so I'm perfect", interesting. If you strip away the "body thetan" nonsense, that kind of works as a mantra, or way of invigorating and affirming self-recognition, sort of a way to positively ground oneself. Of course, it may not have as much significance without it being classified as "a very high level to be attained through progressing through a long series of progressively ascending states of being", and associated with "a brilliant technology", and having to spend one's life being part of a cult and a king's ransom to arrive at that. Oh, well.
