The legal debate about Scientology in the criminal case that put Danny Masterson in prison is really heating up and getting very interesting — and yet we don’t know whether it will have any effect on the actor’s chances of getting a new trial.

On June 25, California’s Second Appellate District will hold an oral arguments hearing in Masterson’s appeal, and it will be streamed live online for all of us to watch.

Masterson’s appellate attorney Cliff Gardner has raised numerous issues that he argues should win Masterson either a new trial or outright freedom. Gardner has attacked the credibility of the Jane Doe victims, he’s complained about the rulings made by trial Judge Charlaine Olmedo, and he is raising questions about the ways that prosecutors packaged the case under California’s “One Strike Law.”

And Gardner has also focused on the fact that Judge Olmedo allowed more testimony about Scientology in Masterson’s second trial than she did in the first, which ended with a hung jury.
