it occurs to me that one possibility though is that he got better as he stopped taking drugs like methamphetamines, and that maybe hooking up with Mary Sue around helped stabilize him (plus she may have made him rein in his excess substance abuse). maybe once he had to send her off to prison, and as he got older, some things that had been more under control at least superficially, got worse again.
