Phil Jones tells us about another thing Scientologists fear: Being called down for a briefing.

If you’ve spent any time in Scientology, you know about briefings. They’re a strange ritual in Scientology. You might get invited to a “special” meeting, sometimes with a group, sometimes alone. It always feels urgent, as if you’re about to learn a great secret that could change everything.

When you’re new, it feels flattering. You think, they picked me for this private meeting, I must be important! But anyone with experience learns quickly, these briefings usually end with a request for money. Yet, they never say that upfront and will deny it if asked.

I learned this lesson again one summer at Saint Hill, Scientology’s U.K. headquarters. I was already suspicious of these briefings because I had attended a few before, but this one took the cake.

A few days prior I had attended an event at Saint Hill. I think it was the May 9th Event, which is to celebrate the release of Dianetics back in 1950 (apparently on May 9th). It was the usual major Scientology event with loud music, cheering crowds, plenty of standing ovations (that always feel mandatory), along with endless speeches about how Scientology was winning around the world. At the event they showed charts with rising statistics, videos of shiny new buildings, and testimonials from people who said their lives had changed. Everyone leaving that event afterwards looked like they were uplifted by the positive vibes.

But just a few days later, someone from the IAS (International Association of Scientologists) approached me and said they wanted to give me a private briefing.

"It has come to our attention that you have a positive balance in your bank account"...

Don't you love those self-serving Scientology dichotomies:
"Global stats are through the roof, we're taking this planet!"/"It's all on the verge of collapsing like a house of cards unless you hand over your kid's college fund"
"Regain your self-determinism with auditing!"/"The not-quite-bright have a button on the item self-importance"
"You too can have the spectacular, terrific state of clear!"/"Oh man, you've just gone clear, you're in deep shit, you'd better get up through OT III before its too late for you!"

It's even more fun when they show up at your front door to "brief" you. Hey might even stay the night and continue the "briefing" the next day as well because you're such "big being".

Imagine the desperation these guys working you so hard to squeeze money out of you, how threatened they feel about the consequences for failing to deliver the money. And they give no serious thought to specifically how that money will be spent. The money that they are pretending to be vital to protecting "the tech" and "clearing the planet". While they expend all the force and persistence they can muster, to drain someone's financial sustenance. On one hand, what a dreadful existence. On the other, how wonderful to be out and away from all that!
