[Allbritton: “It was all about your hate for Scientology!”]
At the beginning of last night’s Clearwater city council meeting, Mayor Bruce Rector set aside time to recognize the two members of the council whose terms are ending. For Lina Teixeira and David Allbritton, it was their final time at the dais, and each had a few words to say.
A couple of hours later, Allbritton decided to go out in a blaze of glory, angrily accusing the Save the Garden movement of hating Scientology, and alleging that its leadership was financially corrupt.
It was a heated meeting that ended with the same three council members who had voted in June to give South Garden Avenue to Scientology — Allbritton, Ryan Cotton, and Mike Mannino — voting this time to disregard the Save the Garden repeal petition and its 7,500 certified signatures.
Save the Garden will have little choice now but to sue the City of Clearwater for not turning their petition into a ballot referendum as called for in the city charter.
For years, church leader David Miscavige has planned to put in a massive auditorium and shrine to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in downtown Clearwater, along with a small park, and next to the existing Flag Building and Fort Harrison Hotel, making a kind of Vatican City for the controversial organization.
