Only the entertainment industry comes under sustained attack this time around, courtesy of a pinkwashing subplot centered on the production of a Justice League knockoff called Rise of the Seven. In place of the evangelicals, The Boys introduces the Church of the Collective, a Scientology doppelgänger that aggressively recruits the Deep, the Aquaman type played by Chace Crawford

TV Guide: Eric Kripke and Chace Crawford on Why The Deep Is the 'Forrest Gump' of The Boys Season 2

/

* * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

The Boys Season 2 kicked off by throwing everyone — supes, vigilantes, and fans alike — off the deep end. So it's only fitting that the most comically sinister mystery introduced in the Season 2 premiere was heralded by The Deep (Chace Crawford), who was recruited into an incredibly creepy Scientology-esque church after getting kicked off the Seven and relocated to Ohio.

"It's not a cult, what are you talking about?" Crawford joked in an interview with TV Guide before explaining that The Church of the Collective isn't trying to rehabilitate The Deep and get him back on the Seven out of the goodness of their own hearts. "The Church and The Deep are definitely mutually using each other for different reasons. They sought him out right? He was at his low point and whether they preyed upon him or not, you know, he really needed that help and that philosophy and that sort of detox as well. He needs them to realize what he really wants, which is getting back on the Seven," Crawford said.

But what The Deep doesn't quite get, according to showrunner Eric Kripke, is that his dreams and ambitions make him a meager pawn in The Church of the Collective's grander schemes. "The Deep is sort of the Forrest Gump of Hollywood trends, and one trend is to get involved in religions that aren't so interested in helping you as much as they are draining your pocketbook and isolating you from your friends," said Kripke. "The Church is ultimately, far more interested in his financial potential than they are in the potential of his soul. They'll get a pretty steep cut of any money that he makes upon his return."

It sounds like The Church of the Collective is making a big investment in The Deep and expecting large returns — both financially and in terms of influence in the Seven — but Kripke and Crawford demurred when asked what The Collective ultimately wants in this Compound V-riddled world, both hinting that fans would just have to stay tuned

Carol and Eagle introduce The Deep to The Church of the Collective, a Scientology-like organization where Carol holds the role of Outreach Director. While The Deep shrugs off their attempts to help at first and angrily denies he has a problem, he’s drawn in with their promise of helping him rejoin The Seven.

A little more on Carol: before joining The Church of the Collective, she worked as a therapist in New York City. But, as she says in episode 1 of Season 2, she now believes “therapy is very destructive, actually.” Now, she prefers the title “teacher.” While she used to help celebrity clients, she left her therapy life behind when she discovered courses at The Church of the Collective, which she found to be much more effective and helpful.

But when she offers to get him back in The Seven, he can't say no.

The difference for The Boys is that while the heroes fight each other with familiar superpowers, they are all even more obsessed with soft power. Who has the better brand? How is this unexpectedly tough interview with Maria Menounos going? When The Deep (Chace Crawford) joins a Scientology-esque church and starts rehabilitating his image, it’s not through impressive feats of world-saving derring-do, it’s through a vulnerable sit-down interview with Katie Couric. The show is really smart about media images and the all-powerful impact of a Q score, and it’s even better at thinking about how the soft power and the hard power wielded by these characters combine into a truly combustible, terrifying cultural hegemony.

Beyond boasting tons of bone-breaking badassery and spot-on performances from its ensemble cast, Amazon's The Boys is also arguably the most relevant and topical live-action superhero project out there right now. The first trio of Season 2 episodes keep that streak going, starting off with an overblown celebrity funeral (complete with a radio-friendly ballad), before moving on to Vought's Nazi history, Stormfront's super-casual racism and The Deep's inclusion into the Church of the Collective, a clear knock-off of another non-religious Church of note. Can I get you a Fresca?

The Deep is severely damaged and incredibly gullible. Let’s start with the latter. The Deep allowed himself to join The Boys version of Scientology called Church of the Collective. Let’s call it what it is. While there, he goes on a spiritual journey. I’m all for taking something that will help you reflect on who you are, but you can tell they’re using him. Especially Eagle the Archer. Something messed up is going on with that Archer. Something we won’t be able to unsee.

The fear that The Boys will treat the relevant topic of diversity in a pejorative manner is fortunately unfounded - on the contrary, e.g. Disney's inability to portray this organically is parodied. Another subplot in season 2 deals with the Church of Scientology and its influence in Hollywood in a wonderfully stupid way. Because on his way to rehabilitation, Deep falls directly into the clutches of the so-called Church of the Collective.

We learn that Eagle is part of the Scientology-esque Church of the Collective. They’re the ones who swooped in and helped out Eagle after he hit his own rock bottom. But the Church found him, took him in, and made him see that archery is a timeless art—even if it doesn’t really compare to the destructive power of assault rifles.

The Boys Fresca Reference Is the Creepiest Mystery of Season 2

* * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

Forget Kool-Aid, someone needs to warn The Deep not to drink the Fresca on The Boys. In the season two premiere, the disgraced former member of The Seven is bailed out of jail by Hawkeye knockoff Eagle the Archer after he causes a drunken scene at a local water park in Sandusky, OH, and his new pal immediately offers him a nice, refreshing Fresca. At first, the moment seems like a strange bit of product placement, but later, when Eagle introduces The Deep to a woman named Carol, she too offers him a can of the Coca-Cola owned beverage.

It's unclear what the significance of the Fresca is just yet, and the soft drink doesn't appear to have any obvious ties to the comics on which the series is based. One thing is certain though, The Deep is definitely being recruited into a cult. In addition to pushing Fresca, Carol also gives The Deep a book about the Church of the Collective. Earlier in the premiere, a poster for the Scientology-esque group can be seen on the subway when Hughie and Starlight meet up. The Boys seems to be setting up a major storyline for the sidelined superhero, but at this point it's not clear how a potential cult will connect with the larger season two theme of superheroes infiltrating the military.

The Boys: What does The Church of the Collective want from The Deep?

The Deep took his and has quickly become a member of The Church of the Collective. Not in the original graphic novels, the cult is a parody of Scientology, and it’s clear there is something sinister on the way. What could that “something sinister” be?

Right now, The Church of the Collective is trying to help The Deep connect with his own abilities and accept his body. In a way, this should be a good thing, but this underlying issue of it being a cult is worrisome.

The Church of the Collective has promised to get The Deep back in The Seven. This is the place he feels he needs to be, but will the cult really do what they promise? Is this just a way to get a new member? After all, the members will help to build the religion to keep tax-exempt status, right?

Finally, I’ve saved my favorite storyline until the end. Chase Crawford (The Deep/Kevin) is simply delivering another truly great performance. He could easily just be a source of humor – and omg, he IS funny! But it’s often closer to pathos that outright funny. I love the nuance of him slowly diving into his real emotions. It’s bloody brilliant to have Eagle the Archer (Langston Kerman) and Carol (Jessica Hecht) of the Church of The Collective which is a very thinly veiled stand in for Scientology. And what’s with the cans of Fresca?? What’s IN that?? However, it’s hard not to see how the Deep has been body shamed his whole life and that a lot of his behavior comes from a place of deep trauma (yes, all those puns ARE deliberate).

On the flip side are those moments that make you feel some joy, which given this show is few and far between. So much so that you can’t trust them because they may be using them to lure us into a false sense of security. In here we have the budding relationship between Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Starlight (Erin Moriarty). It is charming and delightful, a real counterpoint to all the awfulness that comes from the rest of the episode. It is also contrasted with the final collapse of Butcher’s (Karl Urban) relationship and what ever weird Scientology-ish thing that is going on with The Deep (Chace Crawford).
