Another tribute to seminal New York punk band the Ramones is happening tomorrow at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, where legendary guitarist Johnny Ramone is buried.
The event will mark 50 years since the release of the band’s self-titled first album, and will feature a “supergroup” with bassist CJ Ramone, Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, Blink-182’s Travis Barker, and Green Day frontman Billie Joe.
Much like the clash-prone Ramones themselves, however, there’s already some strife about who’s been invited and who hasn’t, as reported by the New York Post in July. While CJ Ramone is playing at the event, other former members of the Ramones or their family members have been left out. The Post story got into the history of conflict between these former members and Johnny Ramone’s widow, Linda Cummings-Ramone.
But we’re more interested in another odd detail about these Ramones tribute shows at the cemetery. Two years ago we pointed out that the party was being hosted by none other than Scientology celebrity John Travolta, and that the 2024 shindig would also be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Travolta’s film Pulp Fiction, which was shown at the event.
It was a tie-in that didn’t seem to make obvious sense, and this year, Travolta is once again hosting the party, and will be showing his new short film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, which he premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
What Travolta’s movies and the Ramones have in common doesn’t seem immediately evident — but hey, who cares, it’s a rockin’ party, right? — except that we find it a fun reminder of JT and his special friend, Jimmy Marino.
