If you want to understand how Hubbard created a religion, you can't

Riddick

I clap to no man
just look at it from a critical analysis POV. You have to examine how he used emotions and authority to persuade.

One of the ways Hubbard used to persuade, coupled, with logic, or critical thinking, is to understand that he used pathos, or emotions.

Hubbard created a whole emotional tone scale in that if you followed his path of auditing and training and reading and listening to his lectures, books, etc. why you would ascend his bridge to total freedom. Seems logical. Total freedom, life after life after life with total recall of past lives.

The emotional tone scale was first introduced in the dianetics book, tones 1 to 4. Later to be expanded in scientology, the religion, from below death to a soul, or thetan, without a body.

They even still use the emotional tone scale on their website to persuade:

although one may think the emotional scale is of use, one may consider that nobody has gone clear or OT, or returned back, to claim a body or be past life clear.

One of the ways Hubbard used logos, or logic, to persuade, was by creating many scales. These are known as the tone scale, the scale of democracy, etc.

I forget now the many scales, but Hubbard used them. I think it's the fundamentals of thought book, even the PDC's.

Scales, as ladders to be climbed (as the "Bridge" too).

And "The Bridge" has two sides.
1. creation of brain endorphin effects in auditing (side 1) by repeating AESPs (no hypnosis needed)
2. explanation of what is happening in side 1 with training on side 2 (the rhetoric).

If a person claims that it is ALL about rhetoric, and ONLY about rhetoric, then they are missing a neuroscience analysis of side 1.
(That's my 2 cents opinion.)

On the subject of "no hypnosis needed," I suggest watching this video of Jon Atack reading his paper "Never Believe A Hypnotist" (that's a quote from Hubbard).

Jon cites 3 books on hypnotism recommended by Hubbard:

In lectures given in 1950, Hubbard recommended three books on hypnotism to his followers: "Anyone in doubt as to how hypnotism works need only consult the authoritative books on the subject by Estabrooks [George Hoben Estabrooks, Hypnotism]. In fact, this (R&D 4, p.345); "There is a little book by a man by the name of Young written about 1899, which contains in it about as much hypnosis as one ever wants. It is called Twenty-Five Lessons in Hypnosis ... Practically everything in that book works, and clairvoyance, mesmerism and so forth are also delineated” (R&D 1, p.307); the third, and most significant, work recommended is Wolfe and Rosenthal's Hypnotism Comes of Age(R&D2, p.12).

I've read the first two books, Estabook's "Hypnotism" and "Twenty-Five Lessons in Hypnotism," by L. E. Young. (You can find the second one here.)

I'm about halfway through Wolfe and Rosenthal's "Hypnotism Comes of Age" (the most boring of the three books, so far at least).

In my opinion hypnosis plays a very big role in dn and scn, not only in auditing, but on the training side, too. TR-0 can definitely induce a hypnotic state. It certainly did in my case, though I didn't realize it since I knew nothing about hypnosis at the time. And I think the famous "study phenomena" are largely the result of post-hypnotic suggestion. Hubbard tells what you will experience while studying and you later experience it.

I think if you overlook the role of hypnosis in dn and scn, you're overlooking a great deal. My current opinion is that hypnosis is the foundation on which dn and scn rest. My 2 cents.

Dr. Hubbard discovered all of the scales that unlock the mysteries of the universe---and thereby provided to man the tech that can miraculously solve every imaginable MEST universe problem!

Every scale and every man, except one. . .

I think it had more to do with stable data. Hubbard piled on the data, filling you to the brim with his "discoveries" that explained everything. He used rhetoric to make it stick.
Hubbard created hisself as authority, that's the "ethos" part of rhetoric. Of course, his ultimate speech was KSW 1965. That pissed off all the old timers like Alan Walters, Mystic, and a bunch of others because he made hisself sole source.

don't know what AESP's are?

But, anyways, just explaining a side of Hubbard, dianetics and scientology.

I've researched you might say and tried to conclude if hypnosis is a part of it. I don't know.

I do know, like myself for example, I read DMSMH back in 1987, thought I would give it a try, I was persuaded by that book to go "clear", seemed I don't know, so check it out. Maybe true, costs were not that much.

I did 250 hours worth of it. The beginning seemed useful, so I kept on. But, while I was doing these auditing sessions, why my reg got me to read some scientology books by Hubbard, the beginning ones were A New Slant on Life, The Problems of Work, etc. These are now called "The Basics".

And the reg persuaded me to do a scientology life repair, or what's ruining me is what she used. So I did it. Didn't get anything out of it. But I was persuaded to continue because I needed to do the next step, yep, it was the purif. The next step of the ladder, or scale, to the Bridge to Total Freedom.

I have wondered if there was no scientology after dianetics, then people would say nope, didn't go clear on dianetics auditing, I'm done.

But, how I see it, Hubbard was a writer and a rhetoric writer and a marketer.

The show must go on, it's the playing of a game. Hubbard also claimed he a musician, a philosopher, a engineer, a blackfoot, a backyard bully stopper, a race car driver, etc. I'm sure a missed a few. LOL

Anyways.

@Riddick

AESPs = attitude, emotion, sensation, pain.
When a C/S has orders for an auditor in auditing a P/C on some item.
Maybe in about an hour the P/Cs brain will create an endorphin for stress relief (then cog, VGIs, F/N).

I am not 100% arguing against what you say about rhetoric.
I am just saying that there more to it than that.
:)

one of hubbards scale is that of motivation,

it's also a emotion.

In the beginning get your free personality test, as you somehow got persuaded to ascend the bridge to total freedom, why you are paying big bucks up each step of the ladder to OT8.

When I first did read dianetics, there was a tear out card that said come into a org for a free auditing session, which I did,

And yet while we first start it's free, later on it's big bucks to learn the secret of the mysteries of the universe.

The scale of motivation seems to be money.

Didn't Hubbard say the work was free so keep it so.

LOL

.

I hate to repeat memes, but there is something so stupid about this I have to mention it, LOL

If a Scientologist sent a funny email to another Scientologist with that graphic depiction of Hubbard as a fat slob, they would be:

  • Promptly routed to Ethics
  • Assigned a lower condition
  • Forced to do hatting on the psych implants and "Jokers & Degraders"
  • Given a higher tech estimate which is a defacto "TAX" for laughing and/or making others laugh.
  • Forced to do an amends project to make up the damage to mankind. Likely including a hefty donation (a second level of Laugh Tax)
  • Forced to petition "deadly serious" Scientologists to obtain their signature approval on a petition to rejoin the church.
  • Failure to comply with all the above would result in a NON ENTURBULATION ORDER, prohibiting any more jokes or humor at the expense of Hubbard.
  • If you made another joke you would be in violation of the Non-Enturbulation Order, and therefore you would be declared an SP.
  • As an SP you would instantly lose all your friends, family, children and business associates, as well as all Scientologists. They'd all instantly disconnect, un-friend or otherwise not is you.
  • If you continued making people laugh you would be targeted by OSA trolls to come online and troll the living shit out of you and anyone that posted where you exist online or in social networks.
  • Continued humor would result in being Fair Gamed and terrorized and destroyed by any means possible.
  • Your demise, bankruptcy or death would then become a huge win for laughing Scientologists.
Well, that's how the COS (Church of Sadists) roll.

The only time you are permitted to laugh is if you are on a paid invoice in an auditing session. And you are not allowed to laugh at the wrong things. You can only laugh at the one of the standard selections from the book of "ACCEPTABLE THETA PUNCHLINES".

Have I mentioned recently that the cult of Scn is severely mentally ill?

I agree that endorphin release is an aspect of people having a cognition, very good indicators and a floating needle in auditing. Many people did resolve significant life issues. Call it talk therapy if you want to and it's been mentioned hundreds or thousands of times on the blogs.

Some people were able to let go of the past and have no regrets about the past. Too bad it didn't end off there.

It was all delusion - these "cognitions" resolving significant life issues. I do not recall 1 fucking win along the Bridge to Total Freedom that in the big picture, helped me in life. In fact, I reached levels of confusion and my life became a fucking mess.

I don't know 1 Scientologist whose life or personality I admire. Not 1 person.

I do, however, know 1 ex Scientologist whose personality I admire and that is HelluvaHoax.
HelluvaHoax "gets" Scientology on a PAN DETERMINED level and pokes fun at it so we cringe less and less and laugh at ourselves for getting under the influence of L Ron Hubbard, the con man.
HelluvaHoax has given me win after win after win.
Thank you HelluvaHoax.
You assisted in my deprogramming from the hypnotic implants and brain washing I had via Scientology. \
You restored my sense of humor, sanity and common sense. I am able to poke fun at the entire scam. I no longer feel bad because I joke and degrade Scientology and its dictator, David Miscavige, it's founder, L Ron Hubbard - the "crim" and the brainwashed goons who refuse to look.
In my book, YOU are a humanitarian and mans best friend. I really appreciate your clever sense of humor.

Just a little point of nitpick - that list is squirrel !!! LOL I don't recall the list of AESPs having all those items (says a CL V NED trained me)
That list is from Clearbird, which is a Freezone site, so squirrelly, yes.

Here's the original list (from HCOB 11 July 1978, "The Preassessment List"). The items are in different order, but they are the same items. (The one at the bottom that's cut off is "Numbnesses.")

If you want to see the original HCOB you can find it here:

(Moi aussi Cl V NED, though I left before they started calling it "Cl V.")
