I remember when I joined the Sea Org at Saint Hill. - On the cans, the Security Chief asked me if I was joining the SO for the purpose of having sex. - Of course, I replied, “No”. - But I was thinking, “Why the FUCK would I join the SEA ORG for the purpose of having sex !?! - Duh !! - There’s a BILLION places better for having sex than the Sea Org !!”

When I came in to the startup mission in Winter Park, Florida, I found that everybody was having sexual liaisons with everybody else. These were the Thelemic and Theosophy types from the mid 50s. Execs meeting the hippie runaways looking for their niche. Power attracts pretty young things that are hard to resist.

One older top exec got a com ev for selling himself to older women as a gigilo. He had participated in research with Ron and used this to impress.. Two other peer impressarios were the same way. It becomes quite the scandal when wives are seduced to finaggle advanced payments form the husbands' checking accounts.

At 17 years old, just walking in to Scientology, I wondered if this cult behavior was par for the course. The execs were really too old for the bra-less hippie girls wearing six inch platform shoes. A couple yrs later at Flag, I learned suddenly that things were much much much stricter. SO could only have a 2D with other SO members. Odd, I thought, as it would be nice to have one of the duo, not on staff, employed with a real paycheck.

I remember the security guard at INT Base recounting when Jeff Walker returned after blowing, stating he was now having sex with a non Sea Org member and not going to be returning to post. I wondered what that had to do with the price of tea in China. It was like it etched something into stone, and now the decision was made to leave permanently. Such gravity put on sexacapades

In the Fall of 1980, I was down in the recruiting office and they were sizing me up. Of course, I had been woking in a strip club as a waitress and they were thinking of ways I might still fit in. While sitting in the MAA or wherever they recruited back then at Flag, the two 19 yr old lasses were aghast that their recent recruit had blown after a month. She was also 18. The girl was being vilified for having jumped into the cab of a huge rig with a truck driver passing through. I thought she must have wanted out of this place pretty bad. The sniping wasn't one of concern for their missing fellow Sea Org recruit, but chastisement that she ran off to enjoy indiscriminate sex with a total stranger. This was abhorrent behavior!!

The gals were bitter about this. I felt the accent was on the wrong syllable as far as why the sudden vanishing.

I'd also read that my SO auditor, Rick Sheehey had failed to return after an overnight sojourn to handle business in town. He was com eved for it. I'm guessing someone was jealous, thinking he may have gotten laid. Complications demanded him taking one extra day to get back on base. Sheesh.

I was born in a latin christian family. Neither myself nor my siblings got maried. We simply lived with our partner. We were peace and love baby boomers.

When I moved to Flag as a SO member, I was shocked at the sin odor of the fundamentalist christian rigid mindset regarding normal healthy romantic relationship and the scientology sauce of the sex police sec checking. I recall young people to be punished for having hold their hands or giving a kiss. It only led to people, especially young guys, full of sex hormones, to masturbate and be mentally tortured about it.

To me it was definitely an christian evangelism background regarding sex and sin + a good way to make money out of people sex drive.

Pilot used to refer to the Sea Org as the "anti sex" league (from Orwell), the clear implication being that Hubbard was down on sex and disapproved of people doing it outside marriage; but nevertheless, some people clearly did have a high old time in the CofS.

Apparently there was a trend in the 1960s for people in the CofS to "get their TRs in" by having gay sex, but it never made it as far as the org I was at and certainly never became policy. Pilot even said that one young woman he knew at NY Org, previously thought to be straight, found that she liked having sex with other women and became a lesbian.

Maybe it's more or less inevitable that when you get a lot of young people together, sparks will start to fly one way or the other (unless they're all seriously repressed)?

Looking at LRH’s history, he was all into sex in his early days, so it wasn’t a religious thing for him.

Making people guilty was a way to extract money or work out of them to “make amends” or “get exchange in”. You just make so many things “out ethics” that the MAA can always find something to get you for.

It also ties into “Ethics Protection”: if you’re upstat, you can get away with stuff, so encourages people to stay upstat.

Also, In my time in Flag I realized many SO members were from a christian evangelism backgrounds.

How coincidental... I took the comm course at the Winter Park Mission in 1971. I only remember a few names... Phil and Marty Stukey were on staff there... later they came out to California and joined SO. Also an older gentleman by the name of Bud. Don't have his last name. I went with my then girlfriend, Carla, so my ethics were totally "in". I was 19. The thing I don't remember is... how did I end up there? no idea.

Phil and Marty were my supervisors. I took the Comm course and HQS and Student Hat under those two. Marty got pregnant and they left to join the SO, then, going to Flag as it was beginning in 1975. I would have missed you anyway by about 18 months. Bud was my auditor and so was April Swanson. Dottie, Ken, April, Ralph were the Swansons who migrated in from Azalea park and D.C. mission.

Bud never did go back to St Hill to train in expanded grades. He kept auditing as a single grades auditor, sneaking in the other three flows. He died broke in Orlando but never left. Bud had lisp due to a chip in his front tooth. Those guys were all so poor. You might remember Ken Barrett, the mentioned 'lethario', who came from Vegas and trained under Ron in Phoenix.

Wow, what a small world. You can't remember how you ended up there? I know, I met a tiny Jewish fella at the local drag club, Ron Few. Probably not how you spell his last name. He got me and my husband to take the Comm Course. Small world.....sorry I missed ya!

I think that mission lasted until 78 and then Flag missionaires declared everyone for keeping all the proceeds. ( And having sex, probably ) Their project was establishing the new Org in downtown Orlando on Magnolia Ave.

Must have been I was there towards the end of '71. Come to think of it, Phil and Marty let us crash at their place while we were doing the comm course. They wuz good peeps. Also implies I didn't come prepared to stay for a few days, so... I must have gone down to just "check it out", because I knew it was within driving distance, and it doesn't cost anything to just look, right? Right? So it was likely not a conclusion in my mind that I would be necessarily interested. Na'meen? Now there was that spontaneous OBE I had during TR-0. I assure you, no one was more surprised than I. This is something I will have to leave to the experts, of which there is a never-ending quantity. I will only say it was one in a series of odd synchronicities.

Ken Barrett. Name slightly rings a bell. Don't remember him. Is that the 1703 tragedy by Nicholas Rowe? Lothario?

The Swanson name is familiar, ah.. that was his last name. I'm now pretty sure, right? Some things get filed under 'infrequent use'.

Ralph divorced Dottie and she went out to work at ASHO with Winter Park exec Mary Jane Estey. Mary Jane employed many staff and laymen in her LA business. She created a line of fancy purses and jeweled clothing like you find in Vegas hotel gift shops.

Nope, Ken not that same Lothario. ( fixed it ) Mary's left breast was removed for cancer, and he took her husband, Ron, to a titty bar, getting even for a KR she'd sent to Flag. Really bad feelings there. She was a super trooper, though. She was a class act when she got to ASHO.

Reminds me of when I was new to Scientology and staff, and I engaged in a relationship with a young (but adult age) new Sea Org recruit. I had a studio apartment just down the street (W 74th St) from the org, and she would walk over and spend the nights with me. I think I did have some recognition that this broke a rule or two, but so what. One night she said she decided it was better if we were just friends, because she still had feelings for her old boyfriend, and I understood, and didn't object. To my naive surprise, that turned out to amount to about a 10-minute intermission from our relationship A week or 2 later, I decided I was feeling that it wasn't satisfactory to. have a relationship in which her dedication and commitment to staying in the Sea Org would supersede our ever moving on to a life elsewhere, which upon discussion ended the relationship. Only after that did I find out how much my superiors on staff were sweating out the fear that there would be strong consequences from the CLO over the relationship, LOL!

In one case it was suggested to be out ethics to let my live-in fiance' help me pay for two intensives. I was 25 and had been shacking with him six years. and paid him back fully.
In a separate episode, I was totally unaware that my staffer 2D had been in a relationship with the present, active qual sec. I could not see that I broke her heart as he moved on to greener pastures....i.e. someone with paying job. Oiy.
Another time I was unaware that my staffer 2D was in simultaneously involved with two other student's wives. Double oiy.
My wog world on night club work, was a lot LESS promiscuous.

Perhaps because both of us were new recruits, not yet thoroughly indoctrinated in "sacrifice everything else for the cause", the powers that be figured it was better to let it slide for now than to risk having both of us abandon ship together, and/or if we became a permanent couple, we'd reinforce each other's participation. In any case, I think I felt that as long as nobody reprimanded us or interfered, no harm, no foul.

I did many life history interviews and translations in the SO.
I was surprised there was much STI like chlamydia, herpes etc among the SO.
I suspect there might have been many gonorrhea infections in times of Ron on the ship and that may partially explains strict rules.
( by the way is my recall correct that Ron had such a sexually transmitted disease ? )
