[Scientology’s giant tent in 2019]
With help from former Scientology London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross, we’ve been watching a fascinating showdown developing in England, where the church is preparing for its big annual “IAS” gala, which takes place in October at its UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead.

Alex organized protests the last two years after church leader David Miscavige brought back the event following a hiatus for the pandemic, and he discovered that Scientology was not applying for a necessary permit to put up its giant tent where the three-day gala takes place.

Rather than ask for such a permit this year, Scientology instead filed a last-minute application for a much bigger project, asking for planning permission to put in large car parks and a permanent footing for the tent.

Scientology made that request with the Mid Sussex District Council, which you might think of as something like a board of county supervisors, with jurisdiction over a general area.

But Saint Hill is also in the jurisdiction of the East Grinstead Town Council, which also has a say when it comes to local planning.

Last night, the town council’s Planning Committee held its meeting to talk about Scientology’s application, and Alex asked the committee a question.

"Scientologists are still being told to “save the date” in October, even though they are still not being told the actual date of the event"

Somehow, that seems to be the perfect metaphor for Scientology, doesn't it? "Save the date" that doesn't exist. "The bridge" to an imaginary state of being. "The tech" that arrives at... going on hoping that "the next level will do it", and/or walking away when it never did deliver the big promise. The war on "the SP's who would destroy our wonderful tech" being prosecuted by people who can find no joy in life.

All hail the emperor's new clothes.
