While Scientology leader David Miscavige’s effort to take control of a short street near the Flag Building in downtown Clearwater, Florida has been at least temporarily foiled, that doesn’t mean that his plan for making Clearwater the first “Scientology City” isn’t still on his mind.
When Miscavige was just a teenager, in 1975, Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard had his agents surreptitiously purchase the iconic Fort Harrison Hotel and the Clearwater Bank building as Scientology’s invasion began. (Hubbard literally called it Project Normandy.)
In the decades since, Scientology has increased its grip on Clearwater, strangling the life out of its downtown, particularly after 2017 when the city council prevented Miscavige from getting his clutches on a particular small vacant parcel, and the church leader retaliated by doubling his grip on the city.
For that buying spree (which was uncovered by former Tampa Bay Times reporter Tracey McManus), Miscavige had wealthy Scientologists buy up properties that are clearly under church control, although Scientology officially denied it.
But Scientology itself is still buying up properties downtown, which Phil Jones pointed out to us this week, and which was reported in the St. Pete Catalyst.
It was the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization — FSO runs the Flag Land Base, Scientology’s “spiritual mecca” in Clearwater — that recently bought four small parcels on N. Fort Harrison Ave for $5.775 million.
