[The giant tent, or marquee, for the IAS event in 2014]
Once again, former London Scientology staffer Alex Barnes-Ross has surprising news for us…

Saint Hill suffered another blow today as Mid-Sussex District Council refused their application for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC) for the erection of their large marquee used to host the annual IAS Event.

Last year, the Council issued a Planning Contravention Notice, warning Scientology that they must apply for planning permission in order to build a 45,000 sq ft marquee on the grounds of Saint Hill to host the event, but instead of doing so, church lawyer Peter Hodkin submitted an application for an LDC, arguing that the marquee has been used for more than 10 years, making it eligible for an exemption under building regulations.

That application has now been officially refused, with the Council noting that the marquee is only in place temporarily and there was no event for 4 years over the pandemic. Best of all, they pointed out Scientology’s lack of consistency in their claims: “The erection of the Marquee is said to take ‘several weeks’ and dismantling and restoration takes about a month. The use of the Marquee (and therefore we assume the field), ‘occurs for approximately one week.’ Elsewhere the application says the event lasts for three/five days/a week. There is lack of consistency and precision in the application documents about the duration of the use of the field during the annual event.”

It also noted that the photographs supplied by Hodkin to support the Church’s claim “could be of marquees anywhere in the world” and were not sufficient evidence that the same size tent is used in the same place every year.

Oh, man! Never get on the wrong side of British bureaucracy! They've had hundreds of years to perfect it.

Sucks to be you, Davie McSavage.

In addition to that, it was the same Mid-Sussex District Council that CoS lobbied to ban the anti-Scientology protestors at Saint Hill. The Council did an extensive investigation on the matter, looking at many hours of video of a previous protest, interviewing witnesses, including police, and couldn't find any evidence to back up claims CoS made about the protestors. I'm sure the Council was in no mood to do any favors for CoS.

Well, it's not so much a lie as a different interpretation of reality. :-)
