One of our favorite correspondents here at the Bunker has been Sunny Pereira, a former Sea Org member who served in the Hollywood Celebrity Centre. She’s written devastating pieces for us not only about what happens there, but also how her own family was ripped apart by Scientology’s toxic policies.

We were communicating with her recently and realized she has a key piece of the puzzle in regards to when Scientology developed the “religious arbitration” legal strategy that is derailing lawsuits filed by former church members.~~~READ MORE

This happened sometime in the late 90’s. Maybe 97 or 98.

There are a lot of things, looking back, that I wonder how come it was me that was “qualified” to deal with certain things.

Honestly Sea Org members in general, especially a second gen, is only trained in Scientology and not educated on anything outside the bulletins and policies of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. You might find a trained engineer or dentist in the Sea Org, but someone who had studied about trauma? No. Because Hubbard instilled it his members that only he had the right answers.

And so we begin.

I was a Case Supervisor (aka C/S). That meant I had authority within the organization to direct any and all auditing sessions and training within the org.

There were two other Case Supervisors but when they were unavailable, the files came to me for direction.

I was sent a file of a man named William, who was asking for permission to go back home to Hawaii. I wasn’t his regular Case Supervisor, Angie LaClaire was, but she was unavailable.

Anyone leaving after auditing needs to have approval from the C/S to leave.

It appeared from what I could tell that he had completed the program that he was given, and was at a rest point, so I approved for him to go back home.

About two hours later, the Ethics Officer, Melanie von Gunten, came to see me to tell me that she had just physically stopped an eight and a half month pregnant woman from jumping from the 6th floor. It took all her might to push her back into the room from the window.

Melanie had seen the woman on one of the lower floors, clearly very upset, and followed her, trying to talk to her. She followed her up to and into her hotel room. The woman never spoke. She had just gone right for the window to jump, which Melanie had stopped.

Melanie had managed to get her away from the window and back down to the second floor, where the auditing sessions occurred.

Within a few minutes Angie LaClaire and Kathy Schobel, the other two C/Ses, were in my office with Melanie, trying to find out what happened.

The pregnant woman was Taiwanese, unmarried. We learned that she could not have her child unmarried. It would ruin not only the mother’s, but also child’s life. She felt the only thing she could do was end life for both of them.

The father, William, from Hawaii, was refusing to marry her. I had no idea they had come to CC to resolve that specific thing. It was an unusual reason to come in for auditing sessions.

Now he was on a plane to Hawaii already.

We were all just starting to figure out what we were going to do, when in walks Marty Rathbun, I believe he was Deputy Inspector General for Ethics, second in command under Chairman of the Board, David Miscavige.

(Me, in the office where the meeting occurred)

Sea Org members from Religious Technology Center could be intimidating or downright scary. I think this comes down to the fact that any encounter or conversation with them could quickly turn into something dire. They had the authority to do anything. They could remove you from your post, or send you to do hard labor during sleep time, or even send you to the RPF.

Back when this pregnant Taiwanese woman tried to jump from a sixth floor room, meeting Marty Rathbun, Deputy Inspector General for Ethics (I could be wrong but I think that was his post), wasn’t that intimidating at first.

I think that might have been because the RTC Rep we had for the LA area was a man named Hansuli Stahli (I hope I didn’t massively misspell the name), who was such a nice person. He would come to CC and just hang out and chat with us technical staff. He was just a super pleasant person who was kind and respectful. At least he was to me.

So seeing Rathbun come in, my idea of RTC staff was they were good people who had made it to the top of the Sea Org.

Marty Rathbun was something else entirely. He was weird. And I couldn’t talk to him very well.

He came in asking what was going on. He had heard all the commotion because he was down the hall, in the secret Celebrity Centre hallway where the major celebs could do Scientology auditing and training without being seen.

It was a huge group in my office by this point. Dave Petit, Rene Duczak, Kathy Schobel, Angie LaClaire, Melanie von Gunten and maybe even Paul Laquerre, the senior ethics person.

I think it was Melanie that told him about this public who tried to jump.

He listened to the story, then asked who was taking this one. Kathy and Angie happily dumped it on me. They said it was all my fault because I had let the father of the unborn child go home without marrying this woman.

My brain processing this logic: ???????

Marty looks over at me, serious face “what are you going to DO about it?”

Well, first step is getting all the auditing files of this woman and pour through every page, looking for errors. It is literally called a “folder error summary” or FES for short.

And…….

Step one: Sunny stays up all night reading hundreds and hundreds of pages of this woman’s files and making notes.

The weird part is I had nothing to do with the auditing this woman had been doing. That was all Angie. Thanks Angie. She was happy to dump it on me and walk away. She even got to go to bed on time. My brain: &$@&$@!!!!!

Oh, and I also ordered Paul Laquerre to call William, the Hawaiian guy, and make him come back to LA.

Then the biggest bitch of CC, the person who absolutely loathed me to my core, Rene Duczak (however you spell her damn name) assigned me a condition of Liability for this.

What the hell???

Everybody has to look like they are doing their part because now this was on RTC lines. Meaning someone from RTC was involved, so everything else got put on a backburner while this was sorted.

Honestly, with or without RTC knowing, it was important to help this woman.

And so I stayed up all night reading the files.

The next morning, early, Paul Laquerre came to me to tell me William was refusing to come back.

The baby was due in two weeks and she had to be married. That we knew.

Gee, if it had been a Sea Org member wanting to commit suicide in order to escape an unsolvable problem, would there have been the same big fuss?

Don't get me started on the ways people got money for the upper bridge auditing.

My boyfriend begged for an early inheritance from his Jewish grandma in Miami, then bogged after old OT VII inf 1979. He became a bit weird, used up all his money not feeling right. Broke, he was recommended NOTS Drug Rundown for all the LSD he'd done.

Two others, ex researchers with Ron, became gigilos to older widows Ft Lauderdale and Marco Island.

Someone else managed to turn staff credit into all 3 Ls. Some kind of miracle paperwork.

Divorces, insurance fraud, defaulting on credit cards. "ACCEPT NO STOPS ! " The bank doesn't want you to go Clear." Screw the bank, the Bank of America, U.S.Bank, Citi Bank.....

No, they ain't giving it back.
