In truth, I would bet big money that the real issue with the Chinese government is resistance to Scientology coming in there and opening up "churches" all over the country. China has 18% of the population of the planet and Scientology has been trying to make inroads there for decades.

Back around 1987, the Sea Org fired off a mission into China, sending a dozen celebrities there to do a series of concerts, promoting Dianetics and Applied Scholastics. Martha Levitsky, the Treasury Chief at SOCO INT was the Mission I/C for this mission, running it from Los Angeles, and she was overseen by someone at Author Services. I was helping her out on both the Treasury stuff and the mission-related stuff. Her husband, Boris, was in China for the mission, and at some event actually met the brother of Deng Xiaoping. I would like to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation.

If China opened its doors wide open for Scientology then CoS would not be speaking out about any Chinese human rights violations.
On the contrary, they would be all over China committing their own human rights violations.

I'm just speculating here, but perhaps David "Darth Midget" Miscavige lost big in one of the Chinese real estate scam investment companies that have recently gone bankrupt. Expecting to new find rich whales in Communist PRC has got to be one of his stupidest calls.

From my understanding Scientology is banned in China. I don't think they care about any of the issues at stake here, they just want to cause trouble and maybe hopefully find a way to sneak back in to China.

it's a competing ideology, with aspirations to economic and political power, though....

ETA: as i've said before, i think the CoS evolved into something very much like the totalitarian Soviet state that LRH liked to make a show of hating on, and in some ways even more like the current Maoist surveillance state where an elite of 'firsts among equals' has virtually limitless wealth and essentially makes their own rules, while the masses live under totalitarian control and have their economic prospects limited (average per capita income is only about $5,000) under the guise of the necessity of putting shoulders to the wheel to create a "New Socialist Man" and expand across the planet.

and the CoS aspires to become the authority that 'says what's legal or not' like the CCP....
