The Parliament of Victoria in Australia recently opened an inquiry into cults — their recruitment tactics and their effects — which opens the door for scrutiny into groups like Scientology.
The evidence-gathering period has now closed, with the Inquiry’s website describing how they received more than 300 responses from cult survivors across Australia. The data released so far demonstrates the common tactics used by these groups: 94.9 percent of respondents reported psychological harm, 71.9 percent said they had felt their personal freedoms were restricted, and 52.4 percent reported physical harm while in their group.
There were a handful of responses relating specifically to Scientology. However. as a whole it was disappointing that UK survivors were not contacted for their statements. As a reminder, Scientology funnels its UK operations through an Australian-registered entity called Church of Scientology Religious Education College, Inc. (COSRECI), which is listed as an overseas entity doing business exclusively in the United Kingdom.
Over the last few weeks, I have been liaising with the committee responsible for overseeing the inquiry, and although they are no longer accepting responses to their questionnaire, they agreed to allow a statement to be considered and I thought the Underground Bunker might like to see what I submitted.
The inquiry is set to review all the evidence over the coming months, with a conclusion due to be published at the end of September.
