We often point out that 1950 was a miracle year for Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but it was then followed by perhaps the worst year of his life.
1950 was the year of Dianetics and Hubbard’s first foundations and a boom in interest in his ideas, but then it was in 1951 that his second wife, Sara Northrup, went public with damning allegations about him, that he absconded to Cuba with their child, and that his early success with Dianetics went into bankruptcy.
But what we haven’t looked at very carefully before was something a researcher helper pointed out to us recently: That between the success of 1950 and the debacles of 1951, there seemed to be a definite turning point.
And that turning point may have occurred 75 years ago to this very day.
Our friend said press clips suggested that as 1951 began, Hubbard’s fortunes were still rising, and interest in Dianetics was reaching a peak.
And Hubbard was about to get a new platform that might have really helped him take off. The previous November, a fifth radio network had started up, the Progressive Broadcasting System (unrelated to the PBS you’re more used to).
It was taking on the bigger boys (CBS, NBC, ABC, and Mutual) with 15-minute shows that were designed to appeal mostly to homemakers, and featured figures like Vic Damone and Mel Torme.
