Scientology Freedom Medal Winner Nation of Islam Minister Tony Muhammad uses a fake Time magazine cover to attack vaccines.

On Sunday, March 31, 2019, Scientology Freedom Medal Winner Nation of Islam Minister Tony Muhammad gave a lecture at Muhammad Mosque 27 in Los Angeles entitled, "“Purging The Black Community: Population Control”:

Starting at approximately 57:00 (i.e., 1:08:34 remaining) in the lecture he presented a purported Time magazine cover, "The Poisoning Of An Entire Generation -- Toxic vaccines. Sick kids. And the incompetent leaders who betrayed them":

However, taking a few seconds to Google the phrase “The Poisoning Of An Entire Generation” returns as the first result an Associated Press story that the purported Time magazine cover was fabricated:

CLAIM: Time magazine cover states that toxic vaccines are “Poisoning of An Entire Generation.”

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. A Time magazine cover that warns of dangerous vaccines is not real.

THE FACTS: The headline on the manipulated Time cover circulating online states “The Poisoning Of An Entire Generation,” over subtext that says “Toxic vaccines. Sick kids. And the incompetent leaders who betrayed them.”

The false cover was taken from Time’s Feb. 1, 2016, issue which featured a story on the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, with the headline, “The Poisoning Of An American City.” Both covers use the same photo of a young child, but the original does not include a syringe with needle in the photo. The subtitles on the real cover say, “Toxic water. Sick Kids. And the incompetent leaders who betrayed Flint.” A Time spokesperson confirmed to the AP that the manipulated cover on vaccines was not the work of the magazine.

It is possible Tony Muhammad engaged in deliberate misrepresentation. It is also possible that he was merely negligent -- i.e., that he didn't bother to verify his facts and fell for an Internet hoax because it told him what he wanted to hear and reinforced his preexisting beliefs. In either case, it reflects on how an audience should access his credibility.
