Is "mental illness" a fraudulent concept?

There's also the case for not forcing the rest of us to have to deal with crazies crapping in the streets and slashing people at random.

When I was in scn (1970's) they were pushing the idea that there was "no such thing as mental illness," and the book "The Myth of Mental Illness" by Dr. Thomas Szasz.

Scn of course would push anything anti-psychiatry. I think I even tried reading a little of it, but didn't get very far.

Walking a few blocks in any major city should be enough to convince a normal person that mental illness exists.

IMO, the source of some mental illness is not mental in nature, rather it's physical. Brain injuries and nutritional deficiencies can cause symptoms that make someone appear to be mentally ill.

I just noticed yesterday a new book by a psychiatrist I follow occasionally:

when i was a kid, while at a friends house, a very large man came down the street, laughing incessantly, and began telling us about how he had just punched two teenage girls in the face. he reproduced the noise of their screams, and laughed some more. somehow soon after, the police took him back to the institution from which he had escaped. i have encountered many more individuals with severe mental illness, though none with this degree of violence mere inches away. the brain must have malfunctions that other humans can only pretend to be able to fix. we as spirit, have a machine to steer. sometimes it appears some are unfortunate to have been born with a malfunctioning brain. now violence itself, is a trait of the human machine, just as with the tigers of the world, not mental illness.

eg There is a reason why we have the expression " I have a gut feeling". If you don't take care of your biome you will not feel too good
