Happy New Year!

I thought I'd relate a New Years Party from the 70's - I was on the Briefing Course at the time - it was down on Temple Street, and the Paiwanski's decided to throw a New Yorker's New Years Eve Party up a their house in the Hollywood hills - I don't remember who all were there - I think the Gamberg's, Dana Smith & her husband, and some others. There was a bunch. I brought a bottle of $2 Andre Champaign which I drank most of. At one point Dana Smith's husband thought it was a good idea to throw his wife's wedding ring into the indoor swimming pool.

Not out of anger - he thought it would be fun to see who could swim down to the bottom and fetch it. I tried. I remember finding my self at the bottom of the swimming pool, not knowing how I got there, then seeing the ring and remembering why I was down there.

Afterwards, I sat down on a red bean bag chair and the next thing I knew - it was dawn.

So Pauline gave me a ride to the AO on Westlake where she was doing the Class 8 course. I some how managed to get myself over to ASHO, because I was supposed to audit my PC on Grade 3. It was very strange going up Rampart Street - nobody around on the streets - occasional abandoned wrecked cars. Like a ghost town.

I was still drunk, so I rescheduled my PC for the afternoon, went home for a nap. I woke up, was still drunk, said fuck it, and took him in session. Well, I guess I didn't kill him, the last I saw him, he was on staff at the Flag AO.

Happy New Year!

Good morning and Happy New Year 2020, Everyone!

Oh boy, it’s quiet here this morning. Cold, too. My “pet” Virginia Opossum is still around; I caught her on the security camera a few nights ago. She’s (unusually) white and still the size of a kitten. It seems she won’t be growing any bigger.

I leave her some leftover bones, meat and fruit in the far yard at night every few days. They’re always gone without a trace by morning. They chew up bones! Weird, right? IDK if Australian possums do that, but the Virginia marsupial loves them. She’s quiet and clean and I haven’t seen an unwanted insect around in a long time, so she’s doing her job.

Last night I went out to celebrate and had a great time.

This year will bring a lot of welcome changes for me since I’m selling my house and moving in September. Hopefully the opossum will be strong and healthy enough to make it through next winter on her own.

Does anyone else have big plans or changes for 2020?

After rodents, marsupials (like opossums) are my least favourite animals, but they do have some good things going for them, they're quite tasty apparently. :D

Big plans for 2020? Yeah, I plan to still be here by the end of it.

Ha! That just puzzles me to no end, the way some people hate opossums. When I lived in Australia, they were a nuisance, but so cute and sweet (especially the babies) that most people tolerated them and some even helped them out and fed them. So it was shocking to find such a different attitude toward them elsewhere. This one is so clean, quiet and shy, too. Well I don't know. Some people blame opossums for all the killing that raccoons do.

This is the first year I haven't had a slew of stink bugs around (see photo) . Ugly, aren't they? They come in swarms and infest everything. I believe I can give the opossum credit for that. She waddles back and forth with her snout to the ground, Hoovering all around the yard for bugs. I have no roaches, either, and I hope by the summer I'll have a lot less mosquitoes, too.

Happy New Year!

I took it easy....tuckered out from work.

Sheila....selling your house?? Moving?

What's going on?
Yup. I can't wait to get away from the train horns. :omg: Not crazy about this area, either. I'm so happy and excited to finally be able to move! It will be five years in September, can you believe it?

WoW! Yes, the time if going by. 5 years! I guess I'm going on 8 down here in FL.

LoL....didn't know about the train horns... Have to remember that. I look out for Freeway noise. Shocking how much constant background noise they can produce. Luckily....I'm far enough away that it doesn't bother me...

I imagine you property has gone up in value some what...

Hope you make some money from it.

I don't hate opossums, I've had absolutely zero interaction with them. They don't live in the UK, but they're marsupials, and that's a category of animal I'm not particularly fond of, but don't ask me why.

As for the bugs, they serve some kind of purpose in the big picture, so completely wiping out one species could have negative unforeseen consequences, although it has to be said, when I lived in Africa I was practically eaten alive by mosquitoes, so I would have cheerfully killed every last one on the planet.

So you don't like wallabies, kangaroos, koalas or wombats, either?

Sure, we don't want to wipe out all the insects, either, but we get eaten alive by bugs where I live. They're everywhere and not about to be endangered. In fact, I'm pretty sure their numbers are increasing. I'd rather have an opossum around than use poisons to get them under control, and even the sonic insect repellers disrupt all sorts of other wildlife besides insects.

Spot on! They are all marsupials and I don't like 'em. Yes, I agree, opossums are preferable to chemicals or other man-made methods of dealing with 'pests'.

Gone away from madness!
I am late but anyhow, happy new year to all of you.
Since most of us are seniors, may you remain in good health and not be alone.

I have plans that I am working on for months and a part of it, which is to heal and rise is well on track, slow motion, but some things are longer to heal. Also, plan to resume my professional independant work.

I may move in the countryside... That will depend if I find the right spot ( on the riverside and surrounded with nature close to a large village) and something that meets my budget. I found 2 superb places months ago, but it would have been too long to wait for.

That would be a 180° change of lifestyle and will have to adapt to a new environment, far from my relatives.. So I must be certain I am ready to make this major move and its impacts.

Do you already know which city you will move in @JustSheila ????

Our possums here are not meat eaters. Bugs, fruit and vegetable type stuff mainly.

I read a story about an elderly woman over here who had a pantry that was open up the top. She loved the possums in her roof and fed them every day with pieces of meat, which they took readily off the top of the stick she used.

She was having trouble with some vermin, can't remember the whole story and she told the pest control guy about the possums in her roof. "I'll show you" she says. Puts the meat on the stick and shoved it up in he pantry ceiling and they took it readily.

The guy said "Lady, possums do not eat meat, those are rats and bloody big ones too!". Her face dropped and changed colour and she simply said "Get rid of them". Lol.

But anyway hope everyone had a happy new year. Be safe and prosperous for 2020...

 That’s funny!
There are lots of comments about the Virginia Opossum’s need for calcium and chewing bones. They can kill mice, rats and other rodents and, rarely, even a chicken, but mostly eat the fruit scraps that fall, ticks, or meat left from another animal’s kill. America’s only opossum is the largest of all of them and believed to be the grand-daddy of them all. Like their cousins down under, they also like to eat fruit and insects but America’s version is completely omnivorous.

Ive seen her eat the food I put in the yard; definitely not rats. Her funny, back and forth waddling walk is always a giveaway, too. They may be dumb, but opossums never forget where they found food and keep returning. I saw that a lot in Australia.

 Yeh, a lot of comments about that on the net! One man out here told me when he was young, there was an opossum that would come in the cat door with his cats every day and eat their food together with them! :roflmao: He wanted to be a pet and part of the cat gang! Awww.
